30 Sep Study shows omega-3s help prevent hearing loss
As you get older, you want to make sure that you're doing everything you can to keep your senses healthy and alert. A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that consuming omega-3 fatty acids can help lower your risk of hearing loss. The research was led by Sharon Curhan, MD from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
The study focused specifically on the hearing of women. According to Science World Report, the researchers looked at 65,215 women over the course of nearly 20 years. The participants reported on their diets and quality of hearing throughout the years of the study.
Women who ate any type of fish regularly – two or more servings each week – were found to have lowered their risk for hearing loss by 20 percent. When scientists examined this further, they found that consuming fish with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, was influential in inversely affecting hearing loss.
The researchers suspect the results have to do with the fact that omega-3s promote healthy blood flow.
"Blood flow to the inner ear needs to be very well regulated in order to meet its high energy demands," Curhan told Time magazine.
Time noted that consuming omega-3 fatty acids has also been shown to help heart problems through regulating healthy blood flow, and that this same positive circulation might be at play with reducing the risk of hearing loss.
While fish that are high in polyunsaturated fat are an excellent way to get some nutritious omega-3 compounds, they can also be consumed through a supplement. When researching supplements, make sure they have a high concentration of omega-3 for maximum health benefits. Omax3 is the premium supplement available on today's market, and it makes a great addition to your healthy diet. It contains an outstanding 91 percent of omega-3, so you know you're taking the very best.
