30 Oct Study: Any physical activity boosts brain health
A recent study conducted by researchers at the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal and published in the American Aging Association's journal AGE showed that any amount of physical movement greatly improves brain health.

The study focused on people aged 62-84 years. Two groups of participants followed a high-intensity workout routine, focusing on aerobics and strength training, while a third group followed a less rigorous program that was centered primarily on balance, flexibility and coordination. The groups doing more intense physical activity required gym equipment for their practice, while the subjects doing low-intensity exercises were able to easily do them from home.
The results showed that while the two groups doing aerobic and strength activities had bigger gains in their physical health at the end of 10 weeks, all three groups showed equal cognitive improvement. Researchers believe this new information will be extremely useful for people with limited mobility. Although they might not be able to make it to a gym for intense training, they can do simple physical movements at home to improve their mental well being.
"I'd like seniors to remember that they have the power to improve their physical and cognitive health at any age and that they have many avenues to reach this goal," stated researcher Nicolas Berryman, Ph.D.
