According to a recent study conducted by researchers at the Ohio State University and published in the journal Biological Psychiatry, stress remains a significant roadblock in women's weight loss efforts. Not only does stress cause women to eat more, but it also slows their metabolism. This causes the body to store more food as fat rather than converting it to energy, which leads to weight gain.
Stressing out over weight loss
According to the American Psychological Association, the average American rates their stress level at 4.9 out of a possible 10. More than 70 percent feel that they have experienced greater or equal levels of stress over the past five years, and 80 percent said that their stress has increased over the last year. Overall, 20 percent of Americans say their stress is as bad as it can be.
While the human body is designed to handle short periods of stress, continuous episodes of heightened anxiety can lead to long-term changes. Janice Koecolt-Glaser, professor of psychology and psychiatry and lead author of the study, wanted to explore how differences in stress levels affected metabolic rates. She surveyed 58 women on their anxiety over the previous day and then gave them a meal that contained 930 total calories and 60 grams of fat. As the women consumed the meal, Kiecolt-Glaser and her colleagues measured how quickly their bodies digested the food.
The study found that women who had at least one stressful event – as assessed by the Daily Inventory of Stressful Events – the day prior burned 104 fewer calories through seven hours of digestion compared to the stress-free subjects. If those 104 calories are carried over each day, this adds up to an 11-pound weight increase every year.
"We know from other data that we're more likely to eat the wrong foods when we're stressed, and our data say that when we eat the wrong foods, weight gain becomes more likely because we are burning fewer calories," Kiecolt-Glaser said in a statement.
