It may seem like children have limitless energy sometimes, but sleep is arguably more important to kids' development than anything else. Getting enough sleep at night lets their bodies and minds recharge and reset for the next day. Otherwise, kids might be sluggish and slow to answer in school.

However, omega-3 fatty acids may help kids get the sleep they need. According to a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford and published in the Journal of Sleep Research, children who were provided omega-3s slept better and longer, and also performed better in school than a control group.

Though children between 7 and 12 years old should get between 10 and 11 hours of sleep every night, many kids only get 8 or 9. While this may not seem like much of a difference, losing an hour every day can compound into sleep debt, which is the time kids need to sleep to recoup their lost rest.

Instead, omega-3s can keep kids from building up a sleep debt in the first place. The Journal of Sleep Research study looked at the sleeping and nutritional habits of 395 children between the ages of 7 and 9 years old. The group was split in half, with the experimental population given 600 milligrams of docosahexaenoic acid, a metabolized version of omega-3. The researchers also tracked changes in school performance and reading ability over a 16-week period.

The study found that the children taking DHA slept for an average of 58 more minutes per night than the control group, and they woke up in the middle of the night fewer times as well. Also, the experimental group showed improved reading skills and attentiveness in school.

Paul Montgomery, professor of psycho-social intervention and lead author of the study, explained that the findings prove omega-3s crucial role in the sleeping process.

"To find clinical level sleep problems in four in 10 of this general population sample is a cause for concern," Montgomery said in a statement. "Lower ratios of DHA have been linked with lower levels of melatonin, and that would fit with our finding that sleep problems are greater in children with lower levels of DHA in their blood."
